Flora

Available Soon!

Age: 18 months

Gender: Female

UPDATE – 3 MARCH 2014: Flora apparently had a very scary life before coming to rescue.  She is frightened of almost everything.  She has been in her foster home for a little over a month now and has made great progress.  She has found that stuffed toys are fun as well as rawhide chews and treats.  When she gets frightened or scared, she will hide under the sofa blankets.  Because of the weather our outside training has been on hold.  She is terrified of the outside.  I have set up a potty area, and she is basically paper trained.  She finds the crate very comforting.  However, when I work long hours, I gate her in the kitchen with her crate door open and she is content.  Her favorite thing is shredding magazines and chewing cords and books - after all she is still a puppy. She entertains herself with her stuffed toys and loves belly rubs and cuddling.

Flora will need a special forever home – a home that is quiet (no kids – at least at this time) and a person who is very patient and understanding of her fears. Once she is leash trained and comfortable with going outside, she will be ready for her forever home. Check back for updates.

7 FEBRUARY 2014: Flora still has quite a ways to go in becoming comfortable as a house dog, but she is making progress. Her foster mom reports: “She is fine with me as long as I am sitting down. She will come and sit next to me and will even expose her belly for a rub. When I stand up and try to approach her, she runs. She will not take treats from my hand.  I have to put them on the floor and walk away. She has started to come to me for pets. She had discovered toys and rawhide treats.  If I put my coat on or pick up a leash, she runs. Emily still treats her like her puppy, grooming her and Flora lets her.” Flora is afraid to go outside, which has hindered her house-training, and she will try everything in her power to escape from a fenced yard. We are continuing to work with Flora, and she will ultimately do best in a home with someone who is patient and that can give her both the time and attention and, sometimes, the space she needs, to adjust and learn to be a pet.

Quick update – 31 JANUARY 2014: Flora is very timid but is slowly coming out of her shell.

Initial info: Flora was an owner surrender along with Emily in Dinwiddie, Virginia. More details coming soon!

Twilight

I’m Available!

Age: 4 years old

Gender: Female

UPDATE – 14 MARCH 2014: My name is Twilight and I am thought to be around 4 years old.  I am a beautiful tri-colored beagle with very inquisitive eyes that are a deep liquid brown.  My foster mom says they are haunting, but in a good way.  To be perfectly honest with you, my life was been almost unbearable up until now.  BREW took me in as a stray, skinny and quite smelly.  My foster mom has put some weight on me, and I smell quite lovely now.  My foster mom has worked with me quite a bit, and I am potty trained about 95%.  There are just some days I cannot hold my #1, but I am almost 100% at holding my #2.  If she is home some of the day, I am a very good girl.  As with any good beagle, I have a nose for food and will go searching.  However, I am not a chewer nor do I destroy the blankets in my crate – yes I am crate-trained.  I sleep through the night, but will cry out if I need to go outside.  I love car rides and get along well with other dogs.  Please do not choose me unless you are going to give me my forever home and lots of love – please never hit me.  I want a home where I can be shown love and in return you will gain my trust.  Trust is not an easy issue with me, as I have been abused.  I am a little slow to warm up, but I do have much warmth in my heart to share.

Original info: Twilight is a 4 year-old female beagle. She is friendly but quiet and reserved. She was picked up as a stray in Louisa County, so her history is unknown. She will be available for adoption once she is fully vetted. We will know more about Twilight once she moves into a foster home, so stay tuned!

Claus

I’m Available!

Age: 2 years

Gender: Male

UPDATE 4/15/2014: Claus is a sweet little boy who after 8 weeks of living with me has finally come out of his shell.  We have nicknamed him thumper because of the little prance that he does when you walk in the door or he gets excited. If he could smile I think he would walk around with a smile on his face all day and of course the tail wagging.  He loves to follow his big sister into the back yard and run along the face barking at whatever might be on the other side.  When we go for walks he walks to my right staying very close barely pulling at all.  He now will jump up in my lap for an ear rub and as well as a good nap.  He sleeps well during the night either on the floor or next to me in bed.  He still does have a little fear of strangers, but he is getting better.

He does have a couple of issues, like all beagles loves to eat and has mastered knocking over the dog food container where ever I place it, unlocking the snap lock, opening the  lid and eating his fill.  He at times has problems with house training while I’m at work and we had to crate him, if your home it is not an issue.  He is also a master at escape and has dug out of my fenced in yard, but always comes back when you call. I have had to place him on a lead and keep an eye on him when he is outside.  I would suggest, either walking him to relieve himself or an electric fence, he is a fast learner and I think would get the hang of not leaving the yard in a short period of time.

Claus is a special little boy and I hope to find him a very loving home.  I think he would be fine on his own or with another dog.

UPDATE – 1 MARCH 2014: Claus is a very special little boy. He has been with me three weeks now and road in the car with no fuss for an hour. Not sure what his background is, but it is obvious that he has not been around people or in a loving home.  He (wearing red collar in the photos with two dogs) loves to follow his big sister (my beagle Lilly) around, but is not comfortable with people yet.   He is very shy and runs for the hills when you approach him.  He is not a lap dog, but will lay quietly in the room as long as something does not scare or approach him.   He has a fenced in yard to wander around in, but when it is time to come in, half of the time I have to open the door and walk almost out of site before he will come in.  When going for a walk on a leash, he will not go potty, and each time a car approached, he froze and shook until the car was out of site.  At this point he is not comfortable playing with Lilly or myself.  When mealtime comes around, I have to put the bowl down and walk away before he will eat.  He is very afraid of new people and kids.

Despite his past, he is a very sweet boy, but right now he will require lots of patience, understanding and love.  I think he would best in a home where people have had a dog before or currently have a dog.  A forever home with no live-in kids or a couple who are empty nesters who would be looking for a little guy to spoil.

If you have enough patience to give him the time and attention he needs you would get a very special little boy.  I know in the right home he will come out of his shell and become a happy go lucky little guy.  I have seen big changes since he has been here, but he still has a ways to go.

Original info: Claus is a 2-year-old male beagle.  He was picked up as a stray in Louisa County with Holly and Christmas.  He is friendly, but his history is unknown. He will be available for adoption once he is fully vetted. Stay tuned for more information as we get to know Claus better!

Krista

I’m Available and Looking for a Foster Home!

Age: 4-5 years

Gender: Female

UPDATE – 21 MARCH 2014: Krista has been in my home now for 3 months.  She is crate-trained and almost completely house-trained.  When it comes to human contact, she is still a little on the shy side with some good days and some bad.  There are days when she is excited that she jumps on me (from behind), is approachable, and sits nicely for you to pet her, and there are days when she is afraid and will avoid you.  She now goes in her crate very nicely on her own.  She loves to play with toys and is great with the other dogs.  She plays often and curls up nicely with the rest of the pack.  Krista is a follower, so she would do best in a home with another dog.

Original info: Krista came to BREW from Louisa County, VA, where she was found as a stray. She is a little reserved and does better with another dog. We will know more about Krista once she moves into a foster home. Stay tuned for more info!

Biscuit just came to us this weekend (23 November) from Dinwiddie, VA. She is a 6-8 month old beagle mix who currently weighs 32 pounds. Sadly, Biscuit was found in the dumpster at the landfill. Tuck

Adopted!

Age: 1-2 years

Gender: Male

NEW: Tuck continues to come out of his shell.  He enjoys the break in the heat that we have been having and likes to be outside. As always he enjoys playing with our dogs and our niece.  He has gotten over his fear of squeaky toys and enjoys playing with them as well, chasing after them in the house and also quietly chewing on them on the dog bed.  He has been one of the easiest fosters we have had had in that he is completely house trained and crate trained.  He can go at least 9 hours in his crate with out messing and goes into his crate willingly. Tuck does enjoy the company of other dogs and would most likely do best in a home with another dog as he is quite shy and another dog helps draw him out and ease any anxiety he has if left alone in a strange place, but another dog is NOT a necessity.  If you come to visit him during an adoption event, do not be worried by his apparent vocalization, as that is not a true representation of  who he is.  In the home environment, he is a very chill, and laid back dog, who prefers to hang out either on the couch with us (or our bed if we’d let him), or the dog bed, only barking when one of the other dogs starts barking first.  He is truly a sweet boy who  is waiting to meet someone who has some love and kindness to give him.

Tuck continues to do well and has settled into life as a house dog.  Everyday chores such as vacuuming and doing laundry are no longer a big deal. He is rapidly learning to make friends with strangers. At a recent party with over 30 attendees, he was a little shy at first, but after a few hours he was playing in the yard with the kids and by the end of the night he was curled up on the couch with a couple he had just met! We have started to take him to the dog park and he loves the freedom of being able to run around, and rides well in the car to and from the park. He is completely house trained and now eagerly goes into his kennel when it is time for us to go to work. He loves to snuggle and play with hard chew toys and the occasional stuffed animal. He is very excited to meet new friends!

Tuck is a very sweet but incredibly shy young dog. He really wants to love and trust people but there are some that he is unsure about so he may avoid them at first and bark at them rather run up and greet them right away. He tends to trust women more quickly then men but he is very willing to give a fellow guy a chance especially if that guy has a cookie. He loves to go on walks and is a much more confidant dog when on a leash. He likes other dogs, ones that want to play and ones that want to just chill out on the couch. He gets along with children as well, though sometimes if they move too fast or make sudden noises they startle him and he will try to bolt. He is also learning to play with toys and even though the noise from the squeaky toys was very scary at first, it’s not so bad now. He loves to snuggle, and we made the mistake of letting him up on the human bed. He thinks that is the best invention in the world and would most likely spend the entire day there if we let him! He is housetrained and spends his day while we are at work in a kennel and keeps his kennel clean.  He is a very good watch dog so may not be ideal for an apartment. As you can see from his pictures, he is a handsome boy with very distinctive markings just waiting to wiggle his way into someone’s heart and home.

Tuck, 1-2yr old neutered male, fully vetted, friendly, good with other dogs, stray at the Louisa Co. Animal Shelter so his history is unknown.

Bisquick

Bisquick

Adopted!

Age: 2-3

Gender: Female

Update 3/6/12 Bisquick is a happy, playful little doll. She has settled into a daily routine which is topped off at night by exurberant play — dashing around with her foster brother, tossing and tugging on her stuffed toys! After all that exhausting play, she likes to sit next her adoring “humans” on the couch, or at their feet, snuggled up close. And wonder of wonders: She has learned to “do her business” outside. No accidents in the house for a week! She is amazingly smart, sweet natured and gentle. She is less and less worried about the noises and people outdoors on the walk but still has that nose-to-the-ground beagle-on-the-hunt posture. It is so great to see her having fun, maybe for the first time in her life!

Update for 2-27: What a difference a day makes! Bisquick is running up and down the stairs and all around, romping with my tubby male beagle, Buddy, who could use the exercise. They are tossing toys and playing wildly and having a great time. Bisquick has come out of her shell!

Update 2-26: A lot of TLC has paid off for Bisquick! She is so much more relaxed inside the house and out. She comes to her food bowl and water without prompting and plays out in the yard without the intense anxiety she had last week. She is learning how to relax on the leash and enjoy the great outdoors. She is still quite alert to cars and loud noises and strangers, but she has greatly improved from a week ago. She also has kept her crate clean for several days, and now has hours on end when she can be trusted to lie around with her foster brother, outside her crate.

Bisquick will be a sweet loving family member in a calm home with a yard where she can romp and play like a beagle!

Holy cow is Bisquick adorable! I mean, seriously, how do beagles actually get this cute?

Bisquick is doing really well! She loves the comfort of her cozy crate and goes in without prompting. She is so cuddly and sweet natured; she has not made a sound yet, not a bark or whine or anything. She sleeps quietly all night in her crate, which is clean in the morning. She loves to be petted and will sit in front of me and wag her tail now, which she wouldn’t do at first because she was so shy.

She loves to go outside and has that typical nose-to-the-ground beagle walk. She is a little skittish still, sensitive and alert to people and sounds around her. She is comfortable in the house, but outside she is clearly afraid of cars and loud noises and other people. She is comforted when I stop and pull her closer and pet her when she gets scared.

Bisquick will need a quiet environment with reassurance and love in her permanent home. She is as smart as she can be. Boy, is she quick to learn! But more than that, she is so easy to love.

Wheatie

I’ve been adopted!

Gender: Female

Age: 5-6 years

Foster Home Update on 7/29:

This little sweetie pie has been with us for a week now. She must have been someone’s pet as she made herself right at home on one of my living room chairs. She also has not had any
accidents in the house and keeps her crate dry all day.

Wheatie gets along great with my pac and is very friendly however a bit reserved. Her tail is always wagging.

She loves to just roam in our yard. And she enjoys when the kids come by and pet her. She is fun to watch as she carries toys out into the yard. And she will even run after one if I throw it.

She doesn’t bark much!

If you are looking for a sweet, coach potato kind of girl, who is a very gentle loving dog, Wheatie is the one for you.

Wheatie is a 5-6 year old small spayed female, friendly, low key, great with other dogs.  Was a stray from Amelia Co. so her history is unknown.
