Cecil McFaddenCecil McFadden Went To The Bridge April 20, 2004

Cecil McFadden - Beagle, Survivor, Internet Star, and Friend. Cecil "Mr. Man" McFadden, a dog that defied canine expectations for life and companionship, died at his home in Alexandria on April 20, 2004. Mr. Man was believed to be 13. After battling — and courageously defeating — various ailments throughout his life, he finally succumbed to cancer. In the Fall of 2000, Mr. Man was discovered on a roadside in Maryland’s hunt country. Many believe that Cecil escaped the brutal confines of neglectful owners, puppy parlors and fox chasing. Mr. Man met with destiny when he was brought to the annual “BeagleFest,” a beagle adoption festival held by BREW (Beagle Rescue Education and Welfare ) Mid-Atlantic. While looking over the hundreds of beagles playing together, Mrs. McFadden spotted Mr. Man sitting alone in the far corner. Immediately, Mrs. McFadden knew that she had to have him. Mrs. McFadden was seeking a quiet city dog, a canine companion suitable for apartment living. All the “people in the know” said that Beagles were not good for apartments, but Cecil was a special case. He exceeded all expectations of the breed. Cecil embraced the apartment and city life, loving the variety of city smells and the plethora of remnants dropped to the sidewalk from the previous night’s revelers. After a "discussion" about barking with a neighbor, Cecil's “Mom" launched the "CecilCam," the web based stage where Cecil soon became an Internet star, albeit briefly. “CecilCam” was an Internet camera installed to monitor Cecil while his "Mom" was at work. People throughout America logged on to the web site hoping to catch a glimpse of Cecil as he rested by the door and occasionally tore through a closet. As time progressed - like a fine Merlot - Cecil gently mellowed and grew to appreciate his alone time. In the winter of 2002, new excitement befell Cecil. His “Mom” took a job working from home. Never was he as happy as when he and his "Mom" would sit side-by-side all day long, Cecil sleeping and Marguerite typing. Then in summer of 2003, the urban dog was transported to the “vast wilderness” of Alexandria, VA - no more street side pizza to eat, but a yard and plenty of chicken bones to chomp! Cecil will be remembered for his gentle nature, his blank stare, and his complete devotion to his caretaker, Mrs. McFadden. Cecil was a gentle giant, a wonderful dog and truly a "best friend."
