Act 5, Scene 1

Pippin: Do you know how far we had to drive to get you? You were on the other side of the beltway, Mom said, whatever a beltway is. I just know it was a long way. Not as far as Massachusetts, though.

Laddie: Sure I know, I had to ride back to your house, didn’t I?

Pippin: Ok, so you’re smart. But you know what, you’re rather a funny looking beagle.

Laddie: Mom says I’m part collie.

Pippin: Like Lassie?

Laddie: I guess, so having my name changed to Laddie makes sense.

Pippin: But, I’ve got to tell you, there are some rules if you live in my house.

Laddie: I guessed that. Are there other dogs in your house? I can smell someone.

Pippin: That would be Buddy you smell. He died. He was a good boy. He almost always followed my orders.

Laddie: Like me? Almost always?

Pippin: Yeah, we’re going to work on that. I am the boss. At least you’re housebroken and good in the car. What happened to you? Did you get lost?

Laddie: I think so. I had to stay someplace called an animal shelter. It wasn’t much fun.

Pippin: I remember the animal shelter. It’s not fun. But now you live here. Mom likes beagles. I guess she likes you, too, even if you’re only part beagle.

Laddie: That makes me happy! I like this “forever home.”
