We were looking for a BREW beagle to fill our doggy void. We found our beagle "Gambler" at an Adoption day in October. The timing was not perfect however and Gambler needed to visit a foster home first. We waited patiently and then attended Beaglefest. We were overwhelmed with the number of dogs but they found Gambler again. At the end of the day they were taking Gambler home. Gambler's name was changed to Link. When we got Gambler's/ Link's papers it described how he had also been called Vegas at the shelter. Well, his luck was about to change.

It was obvious from the beginning that Link had not been in very many happy situations before. Link was afraid of everything and often found a quite corner to sleep in while his new mom and dad were home. Link did not seem to mind his crate and we believe he was crate trained previously, he has even started going to sleep in there on his own.

We believe that Link was once a hunting dog and was abused by a man. At the beginning Link was often afraid of any man he saw and would start howling. When we went to pet him he would cower as if we were about to hit him (Which we would NEVER EVER do). On walks Link would scare himself by walking through the leaves and is still scared when he hears a loud noise. Link quickly came to realize that his new parents would never mistreat him and that he was safe and he became a very loyal dog. When mom and dad had to leave to go to work, Link would cry and cry because he miss his new parents. And he would be ecstatic when we came home.

He is the most happy when we are both home. He still has some separation anxiety and whimpers when we leave but we think he now knows that we would never abandon him. When Link came to us he had a bad ear infection. Twice daily ear drops and swabbing of his ears did not help him get adjusted to his new home, but the infection is now gone and he is feeling much better! Link is now a very happy dog.

He loves to have his belly rubbed and chase after dads old socks. Link and our kitten Merlin get along famously. Merlin provokes Link and then Link will tackle Merlin and rub his nose in Merlin's belly. They are partners in crime as well. Merlin will hop on the table and push of anything he can find for Link to play with. Link loves to run outside and smell EVERYTHING possible. He is taking doggie classes, and is the smallest dog there, but shows the other dogs who is boss when they bother him too much. We are still working on having him listen instead of smell everything. He gets a little distracted at times. Link is getting better when he meets "strangers" and has stopped howling at everyone, but still has some problems with our neighbor Matt, who comes over often. It seems Vegas/Gambler/Link's luck has changed for the better.
