by the Sutton Family

Just before Christmas in 1999 we had to euthanize our beloved Penny who we had had since she was 8 weeks old. She was 16 years old at the time. She was supposed to be a Cocker Spaniel mix but I am more Cocker Spaniel than she was. We feel that her father was most likely a Beagle/Basset mix and she was the sweetest dog. We always said that when the time came to have another dog join our family we would like to get a female beagle. Well one month and one day after losing our beloved Penny I found a small young female beagle running loose at night when a snowstorm was being predicted. I scooped her up, tried to find out where she came from but to no avail and ended up taking her home and she has been will us ever since. Her name is Molly (Molly Mae Munchkin Mess) and she was just what we needed as we were missing our Penny so very much as was or other dog Bud, who was a Chow mix (only he didn't know that). She was wonderful for him. Well the end of the year 2001 Bud started to not use his left hind leg, we took him to the vet and they couldn't find anything saying that the leg had atrophied from lack of use. In Feb. of 2002 we discovered that Bud had bone cancer and tried to save him by having the leg amputated. It was not to be as we lost Bud in April of last year. Just before we lost him we were checking out the BREW website as was our habit (we love seeing all the beagles!) and saw that there was going to be an adoption day within 90 minutes of our home and decided to go and check things out as we were pretty sure that Bud's time with us was coming to an end. We went to the adoption day in Bel Air and talked with several BREW volunteers. It was such a positive experience and everyone seemed to truly understand that we could not take on another dog until we had said good-bye to Bud. We were encouraged to fill out the adoption application so that all the preliminary work would be done so we did. Within hours of our doing so were contacted by BREW and I had a chance to talk with Claudette she talked us into coming to the spring Beaglefest. We drove over 3 hours to get there, had 1 hour to find a dog before having to leave as I was committed to playing the organ at my church that evening. But I was on a mission. Once we got there I found Claudette and she explained what I should do. I had come specifically to see the Bassett/Beagle mix Freckles and by the time we got there Freckles was down for the count as she had been going strong since early morning. Then this sweet little guy with a BREW bandana but no nametag came up and introduced himself. We found out his name was George. I played with a few other dogs but something about George just kept me looking for him. We talked with his foster mom and finally I decided that he was the one for me. He has been the sweetest little thing. He and Molly seem like they were meant to be together. We have renamed him Copper and fall more in love with him each day. We have also maintained contact with his foster mom. It has been such a positive experience. Not only did we find a new member for our family we have made a friend who completely understands how much our babies mean to us. Our thanks to BREW for rescuing little George so that he could become such a special member of our family.
