Update  10/14:  Jake has really come out of his shell in the three weeks he has been in his foster home.  He has become one of the boys and enjoys playing tug-o-war, wrestling and chase.  Jake also loves cuddling.  He didn’t seem too familiar with a good cuddle when he first came to us, and he hasn’t developed the habit of demanding attention.  Jake will very politely sit by the chair and look up at you with that adorable face and just wait for you to pick him up and settle him next to you.  Jake also seemed unfamiliar with a good belly rub.  When I first tried to roll him on his back and rub his belly, he struggled against it.  I had to introduce him to belly rubs by sliding him onto my lap when he was napping next to me – which still made him a tad uneasy at first.  Now he loves belly rubs – his eyes close, his head drops back – he’s in heaven.  But he still doesn’t know how to solicit them – I’m sure he’ll figure it out in time. Jake loves tracking all the smells in the yard.  And he does call to the other dogs when he finds a good smell (but he doesn’t care if they don’t join him on the hunt).  Generally though, Jake is a quiet dog.   Jake is housetrained – no recent accidents in the house.  He doesn’t know how to ask to go outside –but he will sit by the door to be let out.  But with five dogs in the house, someone is always letting us know they want to go out, so this hasn’t been a problem (for us or him).  As such, he has pretty much free reign in the house when we’re home and spends the night in the bedroom (actually in the bed – remember, he loves to cuddle).   Overall he is a very good boy – he isn’t destructive; responds well to “no”; isn’t a food hog or thief, but will protect his food with a growl; loves attention and playing with his toys; and enjoys lying in the sun (and moves as it moves).  House noises still make him a bit nervous, but he is getting comfortable with the more routine noises.

9/21 – Jake came home with me yesterday from adoption day, so he has been in his foster home for only a day.  Although he was probably exhausted, when we arrived home he was an excellent sport about the new doggy greetings from my three dogs.  He spent the long ride home sleeping in the back seat with his foster brother Sam.

Jake already has a favorite spot – a big, soft doggy bed in the corner of the family room.  He seems to enjoy exploring the backyard and breaking into a run.  He hasn’t joined playtime yet, but it is probably will soon, as he watches with interest while the others play.

He is definitely new to being in a house.  Ordinary noised startle him, but he investigates rather than running away.  He spent the night quietly in the basement doggy room – snuggled into a doggy bed – and we never heard a sound from him.  He also made it through the night with no accidents, but he probably isn’t housetrained since being in a house is obviously new to him.

He’s a handsome boy – much smaller than a basset hound, and longer and lower than a beagle.  Jake is also very sweet, and happily accepts pets giving little kisses in return.  But he does need to put on a few pounds – and he has eagerly eaten the extra food he has been given.  So in no time, he will add those needed pounds.

Original info: Jake is a gorgeous 18mth old male beagle/basset boy.  He is a stout fellow weighing in around 38lbs.  He was an owner give up due to his family moving. He is a real sweetheart, great with children and gets long very well with other dogs, cats are unknown.  He was kept outdoors in a large fenced yard so no housetraining to BREW's knowledge.
