11/8:  Checkers is a wonderful boy – loaded with personality.  He is always happy – he frequently waggles his whole body or dances around the house.  Checker’s loves playing with the other dogs and his toys, especially the Nylabones.  Check’s also loves discovering “new” toys and is very proud of himself when he does.  However, he does give up his discovered toys easily when told no, and is quiet happy to return to the approved toys. Checker’s is very sweet.  He likes to cuddle and spend time on laps.  Check’s also likes to cuddle in bed, and given his small size he doesn’t turn into a blanket anchor like some larger dogs do.  And although he loves to play and loves to cuddle, he isn’t a demanding dog.  He loves spending time snuggled in the doggy bed with a toy or napping in the people bed.  Checker’s was also very good with the children who came to visit his foster brother.  He eagerly greeted them and accepted all the attention they were willing to give.  Checker’s never appeared stressed or overwhelmed by the attention. Checkers enjoys spending time outside.  He isn’t a “hunter” so he never loudly calls to the rest of the pack or gets so attached to a smell that he won’t come in.  However, he does talk to the neighbor dogs and the local wildlife, and sometimes to the animals on TV.  But his barking isn’t frequent or very loud. I don’t think he had the opportunity to learn manners, so we’re working on proper doggy behavior.  He is responding pretty well.  Where food is involved (ours) is generally where it is harder to get his attention (which isn’t a surprise).  Check’s isn’t food aggressive, but he will clean up after the other dogs.  He has a clue about housetraining but doesn’t know how to get our attention when he has to go out.  But he will go to the door to be let out. Overall, Checker’s is a wonderful dog.  If I didn’t already have three, he would already be in his forever home.

10/19:  Checkers is a charmer.  He came home with me from adoption day yesterday and just blended right in with the pack.  Checkers seems to be familiar with living in a house, as he was immediately comfortable with the noises, the stairs, and getting on the couch.  When he is excited or happy, his whole body expresses it with big waggles.  In true beagle fashion, he loves his food.  He quickly ate his dinner but didn’t bother the other dogs for theirs.  Although he is small – I can scoop him up with one hand – he is very agile and athletic, and is able to easily jump up onto high surfaces, but he is too short to successfully counter surf.  I am going to enjoy getting to know this sweet boy.

Original Info: Checkers, 2-3yr old neutered male, fully vetted and ready for a new life.  This handsome fellow is small and chunky boy weighing 20 lbs.  He is very friendly, good with people and other dogs.   He was a stray at the Lee Co. Animal Shelter so his history is unknown.
