January 26, 2013: Polly came to us a week before Christmas, 2012. She is a mature little 22lb tricolor beagle (the vet says 6-8 years old) who is very affectionate to people but can be skittish until she knows you. Polly will bark at anyone who comes to the door, but then wants to be rubbed under the chin. She does not like to be picked up and will vigorously fight anything she doesn’t want to do. Polly will come when called and sits for her food and treats. She sleeps on the bed up against me or in another dog bed without problem and is a couch potato. Polly is not as food driven as other beagles. If she isn’t hungry she will ignore the food. When she is eating she is very defensive of other dogs coming near her or the food.
Since she came here Polly has not had an accident in the house. She uses the dog door and will potty while on the leash. She likes to ride in the car and will run for her leash. She likes to explore every scent and bush while on the leash.
Polly will be best in a home without other dogs or children. Unexpected noises and random movements close to her can bring on nippy behavior. When tested with my 7 year old and 9 year old grandchildren, she was fine as long as they sat still and rubbed her. Once they became active she became very nervous.
Right now Polly shares the house with a 32lb resident senior beagle who is very laid back and with a young ~30lb adult beagle who is very active. She often doesn’t want them anywhere near her chair or bed and will snarl at them and lunge if she thinks they don’t get the message. When she wants to play Polly doesn’t hesitate to jump right in. Although the smallest, she is definitely the dominant dog in the household.
Polly will be a wonderful addition to a home with people who are willing to take the time to integrate her into their lives. She looks like a puppy compared to the other dogs but is fully grown.
Polly is such a sweet little girl. She is quiet and just a great beagle. She also came from Caroline County Animal Shelter.

Rabbit is back in his foster home. He was recently lucky enough to meet a family (whose hearts who stole, like a “Bandit”). The family adores him but after great effort on everyone’s part, they family decided Rabbit would be happier living with a family with another dogs.
It seems our Rabbit has a whole whole lot of separation anxiety when left alone which he had not displayed while in his foster home. It is obvious that when he is left alone, (without other human or canine company) he becomes very upset and unhappy. After three weeks of trying to adjust, Rabbit has been welcomed back to his foster home and has not yet exhibited any of the anxiety he was experiencing when left totally by himself. He was just fine twice last night (short periods) when left without humans, uncrated and with just his foster beagle sister and brother to hang with (just as he behaved when this was his home in the past). We are all very happy about that! This leads us to believe that Rabbit’s forever home must include another dog. We are still not sure how he would fare with a cat (vs. dog) companion. .
Later today, he will go to his first adoption day – where he will undoubtedly steal someone else’s heart…
NEW FROM FOSTER HOME!!!
RABBIT arrived at his foster home the Saturday after Thanksgiving. There is just one word for him. CHARMING! He charmed two different pet store workers into giving him “free” stuff before he even arrived at his foster home. Upon arrival, he warmed right up to permanent residents, beagles Rags and Fred, along with three other beagles who were visiting for the holidays. Charmed the dogs and my sister’s family who wanted to take him home with them ….he is not yet cat tested but seems to genuinely enjoy children.
Rabbit is a 16 lb. Beagle Jack Russell mix – but don’t let the Jack Russell part scare you. He looks mostly like a beagle with the exception of his cropped tail (too cute for words) and his front paws which both point out. His energy level is not at all what I expected of a mix with a Jack Russell. He plays but is not hyper. He LOVES to sleep on your lap with his head on your chest and seems generally thrilled to be living in a home that loves him. He does not like being crated – so he has the run of the house. Right now, he sleeps in a crate next to my bed at night … but I fear it will not be long before he charms his way into the bed….
He has been terrific with doing his business outdoors. A few mistakes but really really good. He is walked on a leash and does pull a bit – but with only 16lbs pulling – not too bad. He is alleged to be a fence climber (we do not have a fence) so his forever home would involve a walking regime as opposed to just a fenced yard. On the beagle side, he has a beagle appetite but is generally very quiet (as compared with his foster siblings who are loud as hell).
Again, he’s charming and you need to meet him ….I am already dreading the day he finds his forever home…and takes his charm to his very own new family.
Rabbit is 1-2 yr old neutered male beagle mix, fully vetted. He is small weighing around 16lbs. He is super friendly and sweet, gets along great with other dogs and good with children but is a fence climber. He was a stray in Fluvanna Co. so his history is unknown.

Rico came home with me from adoption day Saturday afternoon. Anyone visiting Saturday evening would never have guessed that he is a foster dog. Rico is easy with people and is very comfortable living in a home, so much so that I am sure he has lived in a house before. He was quiet in the kennel, which he shared with foster buddy Graham, his first night. Rico has shown interest in the other dogs’ food but is easily held back and directed outside. But the best thing about Rico is his personality. He is very loving and playful, and even joined me in a game of fetch. He has been great with the other dogs in the house and has tried repeatedly to get the couch potatoes in the house to play with him, including my old lady alpha. Rico is a beagle/basset mix, but isn’t as big as a basset. He has been cuddling on the (admittedly oversized) chair with me and there is room for both of us.
Rico, 1yr old beagle/bassett, fully vetted and ready for the good life. Extremely friendly and playful, great personality. He gets along great with other dogs but was a stray in Abingdon, VA so his history is unknown.

Tilly is a great dog. We think she is funny so we call her Silly Tilly! She is friendly, obedient, house-trained, walks very nicely on the leash, and gets along perfectly with our other dog. She likes to sit on the sofa with you in a such a way that you just HAVE to pet her or play with her long soft ears. Tilly is so easy-going and laid-back that she is really suitable for any age from children all the way up to elderly. She is probably the most submissive dog that we have ever met. When we first got her, we noticed that she would lay down when you approached her and try to scoot her head under your feet. She still does this some but, hey, she’s Silly Tilly!!!
Tilly, 3-4yr old female, sweet, quiet, low key. She is friendly and good with other dogs but was a stray at the Louisa Co. Animal Shelter so her history is unknown.

Quick update – 28 April 2013: Looking for a walking buddy, and perhaps also a hiking and/or car trip companion? Then Trixie may be your gal! She loves daily walks with her foster brothers, and we have discovered recently that she loves hiking. She had no trouble with a 4.5-mile hike in Prince William Forest and has enjoyed shorter hikes in our local park. In the car, Trixie settles down quickly, even when there is an overexcited, 60-pound mutt next to her, and she usually snores the whole trip. We have also found she is trustworthy left out of the crate for periods of up to about three hours when we aren’t home, and she has only had a couple of accidents in the past month. This past weekend, she stayed with another BREW volunteer, and the report was that Trixie did great with the new situation and had no accidents.
10 March 2013: Trixie wanted to send a long-overdue update, but she’s too busy with her after dinner nap (which lasts until bedtime), so I’m filling in for her. Other than napping, some of Trixie’s favorite things are: walks, ear and chin rubs, butt scratches, yard sniffing, and t-r-e-a-t-s. She continues to get along with everyone and has started crawling in beds with my dogs when the mood strikes her. She usually sleeps in a crate at night, but one night last week she actually decided to sleep overnight in a dog bed with our beagle-sized terrier mix.
Trixie prefers to have some sort of routine when it comes to meals, walks, and potty breaks (and, of course, naps). Walks are a great way to bond with her, and we have discovered that daily walks help Trixie burn up some nervous energy she would have otherwise. As such, Trixie will need to find a forever home with at least one family member able to walk her once a day (or more), but the reward is good physical and mental exercise for both canine and human, as well as a beagle that sleeps *hard*, particularly at night. Trixie does still have the occasional accident in the house (nobody’s perfect), but these are often on days where our schedule gets off. Most of the recent accidents have been in front of our back door. Also, Trixie does need a bit of an adjustment period in new situations, but regular schedule, daily walks, and affection go a long way in helping her settle in.
As the fourth dog in her foster home, Trixie has not had the benefit of much one-on-one training, but she does know how to sit and picks up well on tone of voice and body language. She the general concept of waiting/staying but not for long at mealtime! She can be stubborn at times, but, hey, she’s a beagle! Trixie makes up with for that stubbornness with her sweet, easy-going demeanor, and she eagerly awaits a home where she can have more one-on-one time!
6 December 2012: Trixie continues to be a joy in her foster home. She is friendly and polite with everyone she meets – adult or child, canine or feline – although she can be very vocal when she can’t go meet another dog nose-to-nose. She was a bit overwhelmed by the large group we joined for Thanksgiving, but she was friendly with everyone one-on-one. Trixie has proven herself to be crate-trained, and she will now readily go upstairs and get in her crate when asked. She also takes periodic naps in the crate of her own accord. Trixie is soooo very close on house-training, although our travels for Thanksgiving did throw her off a bit. She does well as long as she is on some sort of routine and let out regularly (when not crated). She does need some encouragement to go out before bedtime, as she now regularly zonks out on her favorite dog bed (no more sleeping on towels) once she’s had dinner and an evening walk. Trixie’s leash skills are fairly good, although she will occasionally burst into an excited run or stop abruptly to get in a good sniff. She is usually the first dog sitting by the door when I go for the leashes, and she also loves exploring the backyard (and periodically running zoomies around it). She is quiet most of the time but is not afraid to use her beagle voice to say hello to other dogs or to remind us she’s there when we get return to the house. Trixie has shown little interest in toys, but she thinks Christmas ornaments are rather tasty – maybe you have some on your tree she could sample?
29 October 2012: Trixie has been with us for a little over two weeks and is a sweetheart. She loves one-on-one attention, but is not demanding, and her ears and tail perk up immediately if you talk to her. She is pretty low key indoors, loves walks and exploring the yard, and continues to get along with the resident mutts and ignore the cats. Trixie came to us accustomed to life in an indoor/outdoor kennel with a doggy door (and was living by a dumpster before landing in a shelter), and she does not seem to have ever been a house pet. With that in mind, she is doing well, and she is not afraid of anything indoors. She is making great strides towards house-training (this has mostly been a matter of retraining humans who are used to dogs with bladders of steel), and although she doesn’t love the kennel, she is doing better with it every day. She is also clearly used to a life of sleeping on hard surfaces, preferring a towel on the wood floor to one of our many cushy dog beds, but (today) she seems to have realized the beds are pretty nice, too. Trixie picked up on our hand signal for “sit” almost immediately, and she often comes when called (actually, when any dog is called), although she can be distracted by food or another great smell. She gets really excited when we see other dogs (especially beagles), and she has been friendly with everyone we’ve met (all adults, so far). Trixie would likely do well in most homes, and she eagerly awaits her forever family!
14 October 2012 – Trixie is a lovely beagle girl whose longer body suggests she may have a touch of basset hound in her. She is a stray from Madison County and the mother to BREW internet sensation, Bosco (already adopted). Trixie has only been in her foster home for a day, but she has been fine with the resident mutts (15, 30, and 60 lbs) and has ignored the resident cats apart from a quick sniff of one that yowled at her. She is a little out of sorts in the house, but seems to be settling in well and mostly housebroken. She is very affectionate toward people, and she loves to have her ears rubbed. Trixie needs a little practice on the leash, but she has enjoyed her first two walks with the pack, and she will potty both on a leash and in the yard. Stay tuned for more information on Trixie as she settles in to her foster home.

Webster is a BREW alumnus adopted in 2005. He did well in his home until a child came along and the owners worried that Webster was too aggressive with the toddler. On medical examination, Webster was diagnosed with early Cushing’s. Meaning – he was hungry all the time! And probably was going after food! He has been treated and is doing very well on his medication. He gets a weekly pill and has a normal beagle appetite. The vet says his Cushing’s is at a level 2 out of 10 and that he is very adoptable.
Webster (my husband calls him WebSTAR) is a super affectionate boy. Webster greets each morning with joy and optimism. He is playful with my dogs and has been wonderful with the neighborhood children. But, he shouldn’t go to a home with toddlers, just based on the past. And someone willing to give him weekly pills is also a requirement.
He walks really well on lead. When he is tired, he likes to snooze in a open crate or in a dog bed. He has that magic energy – always up for a walk or some play – but also always ready to settle down and snooze peacefully. He has been pure joy in his foster home. But, I know he would like to be someone’s special boy!

Quick update from Mollie’s foster mom: Lubby dubby. Kissy, kissy. Mollie has become a very affectionate dog over the past few weeks. She has a lot of love and happy companionship to give. You could be the object of her affection!
Update: She is wary of the vacuum, but was brave enough to go up and nip it!
Mollie was well cared for by her previous owner. Unfortunately, she couldn’t keep her when she went into assisted living. Mollie is very sweet and very good company. She wants to be where I am and she is always ready to go for a walk. She lets me know when she wants to go out for a walk or needs to go out back for a bathroom break by being vocal. After our morning walk, she can tell when I am ready to leave for work. She very politely goes to sit in her crate and waits for her treat. She stays in a crate durig the day for up to eight hours. When I get home, she greets me with barking and howling to let me know it is time to take her for a walk! She goes in the car very well and has stayed with me at my Mother’s house on the weekend sometimes. She does have some anxiety if I have to leave her there to run an errand for my Mother and always greets me heartily when I return. She lets me know when someone is close to the house.

Hi, they call me Magnum, but I really answer to a whistle. I learn really fast so if you adopt me, you could give me any name you want, I’ll learn it! I love to watch TV, go for walks, and to play with toys. I stay in a crate while my fosters are at work, they said I had too much fun with the newspaper (hey, I left the trash can alone!) I loved having kids come to my door the other night (Howl-o-ween), what a treat for me! I want to meet more! I also like meeting other dogs around our neighborhood. I’m not afraid of anything, just curious and easy-going. As much as I love my foster home, I would love to be in a home with lots of kids and action! Come meet me at adoption day in Alexandria on Nov. 17th!
Update from Foster Home: Magnum is doing great! He is a very sweet bagel-boy (beagle-basset mix), not too big at just 36 lbs., plays well with our two, and is house-trained (just had to say “no” a couple of times). He’s seems very smart, figuring out the stairs easily (but still a little clumsy at them), the doggie door was a breeze, and will now ‘sit’ before being fed. I’m still working on ‘stay’. He doesn’t come to his name (or any other name we’ve tried), but he does respond to a whistle and command to come. He is not at all aggressive, even during the 3 baths I have given him. He is very huggable and is just learning the joys of tummy rubs. He has been great at meeting other dogs and kids in the neighborhood on our walks. It’s very easy to get the harness on him and he loves our walks. He seems to like everyone he meets, no barking at all, but we haven’t yet encountered anyone younger than about 7 years old. He has barked and bayed a few times, but he’s not too loud (like our own bagel). He’s more than ready to add his charm to a loving family!
Hi, I’m new here. Will you be my friend?
Magnum is a beagle-basset mix … AKA Low-Ri-Der
